Could not find backend for PVC or during update after a Trident upgrade

After upgrading Trident to a recent Astra Trident release, the following error occurred trying to create a PVC:
No available storage for access modes[Read/Write/Many] alert received.
An attempt to update the backend caused the error:
Failed to apply the backend update; could not find backend during update
