Answer

Only NetApp's Data ONTAP software Write Anywhere File Layout (WAFL) can be run on a NetApp filer.

However, the filer does support many industry standard file and block level protocols. Some of those include Network File System (NFS), Common Internet File System (CIFS), HTTP, Direct Access File System (DAFS), etc.
