SolidFire/HCI error message after replacing an SSD: drive is using unsupported firmware version
Applies to
- NetApp SolidFire storage nodes
- NetApp HCI storage nodes
- NetApp Element software
Issue
The replacement drive has a version of firmware different than the expected firmware for the version of Element software that the node is running
Note: The same error message will be logged whether the firmware version is higher or lower than the expected version
Example 1: A drive with higher firmware is inserted into a node running an older version of Element:
- Element software will not downgrade the firmware on that drive
- A
hardwareConfigMismatch
cluster fault similar to the following will be logged:
The drive in slot x should be using firmware version EDA5202Q, but is using unsupported version EDA5302Q
The drive in slot x should be using firmware version EDA5202Q, but is using unsupported version EDA5402Q.
Example 2: A drive with lower firmware is inserted into a node running a newer version of Element:
- If the cluster is running Element software 11.x or below, Element software will not attempt to upgrade the firmware on the drive
- If the cluster is running Element software 12.x or above, Element software will attempt to upgrade the firmware on the drive
- In some instances, the attempt to update the drive firmware may fail, resulting in the following events:
driveEvent Attempting to flash drive firmware.
driveEvent Failed to flash drive firmware.
platformHardwareEvent Hardware fault detected
- A
hardwareConfigMismatch
cluster fault similar to the following will be logged:
The drive in slot 6 should be using firmware version EDA5302Q, but is using unsupported version EDA5202Q
