Some openssh clients fails to connect to ONTAP when FIPS is enabled

  • ONTAP >= 9.8 and <9.12.1
  • OpenSSH client 8.6p1 or 9.0p1 (possible others too)
  • FIPS enabled in ONTAP
  • MacOS


The following error message is being returned to the openssh 8.6p1 client upon connect to ONTAP:
Thu Nov 25 2021 15:07:28 01:00 [auth:CRITICAL] 1 2021-11-25T15:07:28.452836 01:00 CLUCF1510100-01 sshd 15750 - - fatal: mm_answer_sign: sshkey_sign failed: error in libcrypto
