"disk replace" fails in ONTAP with error message: "Disk X is not of appropriate size"

  • FAS2552 
  • FAS2554

Issue

  • The following command fails on a partitioned disk right-sized into a smaller aggregate with a whole disk of appropriate size:

::*> disk replace -disk VMw-1.31 -action start -replacement VMw-1.28
Error: command failed: Disk VMw-1.28 is not of appropriate size.

  • The system should partition the new disk but fails with the error below seen in the EMS:

[cluster-01: mgwd: raid.disk.replace.job.failed:error]: Failed to replace 
disk 1.20.0 with disk 1.10.11. 
                Reason: Reserve: Unable to reserve disks on source node cluster-01.
