Description

Few critical issues were discovered in the lease functionality of the Server Message Block (SMB) 2.1 protocol supported in Data ONTAP operating in 7-Mode. These issues had the potential to cause disruptions in CIFS service availability. Due to this, NetApp recommended disabling SMB 2.1 for specific releases, to temporarily address these issues.

The known issues are fixed and this document describes a new persistent method to enable SMB 2.1 and its leases feature in Data ONTAP 8.2.3 and its subsequent patches. The existing method of using setflag and making it persistent through alteration to the /etc/rc file is still available.

  • Apart from all known disruptive lease issues, a number of other internally discovered issues related to potential disruptions, performance degradation, supportability, and testability of the SMB 2.1 protocol have been fixed.
  • The fixes are available in all releases of Data ONTAP version 8.2.3 and its subsequent patches.
  • The SMB 2.1 functionality remains disabled in its default operating mode and this article describes the methods to configure it to the 'enabled' state, in the Solution section below.

Some of the important fixes made as part of the SMB 2.1 improvement are listed below:
