File copy over CIFS from Red Hat 7.3 to NetApp fails

When copying a file from a client running Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.3 to ONTAP 9 hosted storage using CIFS, the file transfer may fail, reporting an error similar to:

[user@client]{problemDescription}#160;for i in `cat valid_files`; do cp "${i}" /DATA/file/path; done
cp: failed to close‘/DATA/file/’: Cannot allocate memory
cp: failed to close
