Why does a 25gbE SFP+ in an Element storage node not negotiate to 10gbE?

Answer

Element storage nodes with NICs capable of 25GbE do NOT auto-negotiate to that speed (even with 25GbE SFP+ transceivers connected); however, the switches they connect to can.
 
Storage nodes with 10GbE SFP+ transceivers can be connected to switch ports with 25GbE SFP+ transceivers as the switch is responsible for auto-negotiating the connection speed; however, the switch will negotiate only to 10GbE in that scenario.
 
Ideally, 10GbE transceivers should be used on both the switch and the storage side in this scenario, but in any case the negotiation is at the switch side.
