Answer

  • No , This is unsupported configuration
  • License Types Overview:

There are two types of licenses available for ONTAP Select:

    1. Capacity Tiers:

      • Type: Perpetual License
      • Binding: Locked to a single node
      • Renewal: Requires periodic renewal of the support contract
    2. Capacity Pools:

      • Type: Term-based License
      • Binding: Locked to a specific License Manager instance
      • Scope: Applies to a storage pool, which is a collection of nodes
      • Renewal: Needs to be renewed near the expiration date

    License Flavors:

Each license type is available in three distinct flavors:

    1. Standard Capacity Pool License:

      • Supports deploying ONTAP Select on a small VM instance (4 CPUs, 16 GB memory)
      • Uses HDDs as backing storage
    2. Premium Capacity Pool License:

      • Supports deploying ONTAP Select on a medium VM instance (8 CPUs, 64 GB RAM)
      • Uses SSDs as backing storage
      • Supports Software RAID deployments (enforced by Deploy at the time of provisioning)
    3. Premium XL Capacity Pool License:

      • Supports deploying ONTAP Select on small, medium, or large VM instances
      • Uses either HDDs or SSDs as backing storage
      • Supports both local hardware RAID controllers and Software RAID

    Platform License Offerings:

    1. Standard:

      • Small instance type
      • HDD only
      • Local hardware RAID controller only
      • vNAS
    2. Premium:

      • Small or medium instance type
      • HDD or SSD
      • Local hardware RAID controller or Software RAID
      • vNAS
      • MetroCluster SDS
    3. Premium XL:

      • Small, medium, or large instance type
      • HDD or SSD
      • Local hardware RAID controller or Software RAID
      • vNAS
      • MetroCluster SDS

    Understanding Drive Type Determination:

ONTAP Select (OTS) determines the drive type during the deployment phase based on the ESXi-side configuration of the datastore:

  • OTS determines drive type initially (during deploy), based on the ESXi-side configuration of the datastore, either "Flash" or "HDD".
  • When OTS is deployed on HDD datastore, it shows disks as type VMDISK.
  • When OTS is deployed on SSD/Flash datastore,   it shows disks as type SSD.
