ONTAP SAN FC port with 500 initiator logins LIF reports waiting for link and FC transport operation timed out

Issue

  • Missing paths on host end-

20:0e:00:a0:98:xx:xx:xx MISSING NetApp  NetApplif

  • But on ontap end the lif is up and there areere other hosts logged in using same lif on NetApp end
  • In large shared tenancy environment with high number of storage virtual machines (SVM) and LIFs with 500+ initiator logins per FC target port exceeding the FC ITN specifications may cause LIF fabric timeouts and lost paths
  • Exceeding soft limit Hardware universe "Maximum Number of SAN Hosts (ITNs)" may cause fabric zoning issues and or fabric timeouts for initiators and targets
  • Command network interface show -fields status-extended  indicates one or more LIFs on FCP port are "Waiting for Link"  when physical connection to switch is healthy
  • Commands like network fcp topology show and network fcp zone show throws " FC transport operation timed out" error.

  • It does not give the output but throws a warning -"   Warning: Unable to list entries for kernel on node "NetApp": FC transport operation timed out."
