Applies to

  • NetApp FAS2820
  • ONTAP 9.14.1P7 (Cluster Mode)
  • Windows Server (NTFS)
  • Commvault backup application
  • iSCSI LUNs with space-allocation enabled

Issue

  • Significant mismatch in space usage reported between ONTAP clusters and Windows/Commvault replicated sites
  • Aggregate utilization exceeds 80%, with very large LUN/VOL and daily data change rates
  • SCSI UNMAP (space reclamation) not occurring as expected or is severely delayed
  • Volume move and storage snapshots further increased space usage to critical levels
ONTAP output examples:

cluster1::*> lun show -path /vol/sql1_db/sql1_db -fields space-allocation,serial
