Answer

  • Reducing the size of a LUN on NetApp storage that is actively used by VMware ESXi (VMFS datastore) is not supported and presents significant risks.
  • Shrinking a LUN on the storage system (including using the -force option) without coordinated action on the host can result in:
    • Data loss
    • File system corruption
    • Errors such as File protectedlist closed with dirty buffers
    • Inability to boot or access the datastore
  • Consult with VMware support for guidance on supported recovery or rollback options.
