Applies to

  • ONTAP 9
  • Systems with NetApp Volume Encryption (NVE) or S3 Object Store volumes
  • Scenarios where the ONTAP onboard/external key manager key is lost and encrypted volumes are offline

Issue

  • After losing the ONTAP key manager key during a node replacement, all encrypted volumes became permanently offline and inaccessible.
  •  Attempts to delete these offline encrypted volumes using standard methods failed with errors, such as:

::*> vol delete -vserver vs0_obj -volume fg_1234567890 -force true
Error: command failed: Cannot delete object store volume "fg_1234567890" in Vserver "vs0_obj", because this volume is associated with object store bucket "bkt".
::*> vserver object-store-server bucket delete -vserver vs0_obj -bucket bkt
Error: command failed: Failed to remove bucket "bkt" for Vserver "vs0_obj". Reason: Failed to check if the bucket is empty. Reason: Volume is offline.
