Answer

  • ONTAP operates as a standard CIFS/SMB file server.
  • ONTAP handles MIP protected content as regular file data.
  • ONTAP does not decrypt, interpret, or modify Microsoft Information Protection (MIP)–protected files.
  • Storing files with MIP labels or encryption on ONTAP has no functional restriction.
  • MIP protected files can be:
    • saved
    • copied
    • moved
    • backed up
    • replicated through ONTAP
  • Opening or viewing MIP protected files depends on the accessing client:
    • the client must have valid MIP permissions
    • the client must have a supported MIP enabled application
    • users without required authorization cannot open the file
