VMware VCenter backup via CIFS "Failed to create backup directory Plugin error occurred"

Issue

  • When VCenter attempts to perform a backup to ONTAP via CIFS, the following error is encountered: 
    • [BackupManager::CreateTargetBackupDir:BackupManager.py:111] ERROR: Failed to create backup directory Plugin error occurred. ErrCode: 5, Args: ()
  • A packet trace of this failure does now show the client attempting to create the indicated directory
  • The backup job is successful when run using NFS or when run against a Windows server via SMB
