Unable to access CIFS via DNS Alias due to misconfigured SPN

Issue

  • Clients are unable to access CIFS server using a DNS Alias.
  • File Explorer navigates to \\DNS_Alias\share_name and get a pop up that says
Network Error
Windows cannot access \\DNS_Alias\share_name
Check the spelling of the name. Otherwise, there might be a problem with your network. To try to identify and resolve network problems, click Diagnose.
Error code:  0x800004005
Unspecified error
  • Event logs are showing the error KRB5KRB_AP_ERR_BAD_INTEGRITY
  • Packet trace shows the client receiving the error KRB5KRB_AP_ERR_MODIFIED or KRB_AP_ERR_MODIFIED from ONTAP in response to Session Setup Request
