Saving Excel files creates a broken link temporary file and reports a file save error

Issue

  • After attempting to save a .xlsx file, it intermittently reports 2 different errors.
    • "We found a problem with some content in 'filename.xlsx.' Do you want us to recover as much as we can?"
    • "Your changes could not be saved to filename.xlsx because of a sharing violation. Try saving to a different file.”
  • A temporary file is created with the name of the file appended with broken link in the same directory
    • filename broken link.xlsx
