NFS Error “No Space Left on Device” Caused by Directory Reaching Maxdirsize Limit

Issue

  • Application failed to store files on the NFS share, and the application logs displayed the following error:
java.io.FileNotFoundException: <path/ptah/filename.pdf (No space left on device)
  • ONTAP EMS Events Observed:
    • Several alerts indicate the directory in this volume was approaching the maxdirsize limit:
wafl.dir.size.warning: Directory size for file ID "xxxx" in volume "<volume name>" is approaching the maximum directory size (maxdirsize) limit.
