Applies to

  • ONTAP 9
  • CIFS/SMB
  • Linux clients using RHEL 6 (SMB 1)

Issue

  • Linux CIFS clients accessing NTFS-style CIFS shares hosted on NetApp ONTAP through a DFS namespace are unable to create files or directories.
  • File creation and directory creation operations fail with Input/output error, for example:
touch testfile.txt
touch: cannot touch 'testfile.txt': Input/output error
mkdir testdir
mkdir: cannot create directory 'testdir': Input/output error
  • The CIFS share mounts successfully on the Linux client and read operations work, but file and directory creation fails with input/output errors, while Windows clients using the same credentials and DFS path function normally, ONTAP security and EMS logs show no permission or ACL errors, and packet traces show SMB create requests failing with a server response.
