Applies to

  • ONTAP 9
  • CIFS/SMB
  • Active Directory (AD)
  • Domain Controller (DC)
  • Domain Name System (DNS)

Answer

  • No, ONTAP does not alter the case of the information pulled from various sources such as AD, DNS, or DCs. Whether the data is in capital or lowercase, we retain the original format as it exists in the respective AD, DNS, or DC entries.
  • For the purposes of CIFS, AD, or DNS, the case of the letters is irrelevant. When attempting to ping a specific name, the resolution to an IP address will occur regardless of whether the letters are in uppercase, lowercase, or a combination of both.
  • As long as the name resolution process is functioning correctly, we can expect the system to operate smoothly. Therefore, any issues encountered with the CIFS check failing on a particular node are more likely related to networking concerns rather than the letter case.

Example:

::vserver cifs*> check

Vserver : SVM1-CIFS
Cifs NetBIOS Name : CIFS1
Cifs Status : Running
Site : SITE1

Node Name DC Server Name DC Server IP Status Status Details
--------------- -------------- --------------- ------ --------------
node-01
domain.local 10.1.1.11 up Response time (msec): 17

Vserver : SVM1-CIFS
Cifs NetBIOS Name : CIFS1
Cifs Status : Running
Site :

Node Name DC Server Name DC Server IP Status Status Details
--------------- -------------- --------------- ------ --------------
node-02
DOMAIN.LOCAL - down Unable to contact DNS

Vserver : SVM1-CIFS
Cifs NetBIOS Name : CIFS1
Cifs Status : Running
Site : SITE1
