Answer

  • No, adding a Windows domain user to the ONTAP SMB local group BUILTIN\Backup Operators does not allow that user to search files or folders for which the user does not have access permissions.
  • Members of BUILTIN\Backup Operators can override read and write permissions only when files or folders are opened with backup intent.
  • General file search operations are not treated as backup-intent operations, including:
    • Windows Explorer search
    • dir
    • findstr
    • Many third-party search or indexing tools
  • When a file or folder is accessed without backup intent and the user lacks the required permissions, access is denied.
  • Backup software that opens files with backup intent, such as Robocopy or Windows backup-related tools, can use the privileges granted to BUILTIN\Backup Operators.
