Are there alternative was to create the cifs server machine account outside of having ONTAP create it?

Answer

  • Yes. In situations were the domain admin does not have access in AD to be able to create the machine account, at all or in a specifc OU, but does have the access to make modifications to existing account, a CIFS create would fail using thier creditials.
  • In situation like this the cifs server machine account can be created in Active Directory prior to the vserver cifs create or vserver active-directory create command being run.
  • When running the command the admin should provided desired server name, OU,  and storage admin creditials and ONTAP will search for an account of the same name.
  • Once the account is found a prompt to use the same AD account is recieved. Upon accepting the prompt the precreated account will be used and updated with the needed information for ONTAP to use it.
