  • No , ONTAP supports UTF-8 encoded file and directory names when the volume language is set to UTF-8 (utf8 or utf8mb4).
  • Supported character handling includes:
    • Standard UTF-8 characters.
    • Four-byte UTF-8 characters (extended or multibyte characters).
  • SMB file and directory names can generally use characters defined by the UTF-8 standard when the volume language is UTF-8.
  • Note: File name usability and acceptance may still depend on the SMB client operating system or application, even when ONTAP supports the character encoding.
