After migration, CIFS is inaccessible using DNS name (IP address works)

Last Updated:

Applies to

  • ONTAP 9
  • CIFS
  • Microsoft Domain Controller (DC)
  • Microsoft Active Director (AD)
  • Domain Name Resolution (DNS)
  • Service Principal Name (SPN)

  • There is migration from and an old to new ONTAP storage system.
  • DNS configuration is changed so that the original name maps to an IP address of a CIFS SVM data LIF.
  • On attempting to access the CIFS server, there is a hang and timeout followed by a generic network path not found error.
  • Connecting to CIFS server using the IP address works.
  • The DNS name resolves successfully with no name resolution issues found.
  • Logging on and off, clearing DNS cache, or rebooting the client does not help.
