"Can't read from the source file or disk" due to vscan scan-mandatory

Issue

  • Users are unable to access file on CIFS shares, even though the correct permissions are in place
    • Can't read from the source file or disk
  • packet trace shows that 
    • Client sends Create request for the file
    • ONTAP sends Create response that contains STATUS_UNSUCCESSFUL
    • Client sends Create request for the file
    • ONTAP sends Create response that contains STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED
  • vserver security trace trace-result show says
    • Client successfully accessed the parent folder(s)
    • Client did not try to access the file
  • file-directory show-effective-permissions says that user has permission to access the file
  • VSCAN is enabled on the affected vservers
  • No Vscan servers are connected 
    • ::> vscan connection-status show
  (vserver vscan connection-status show)
