  • Two-node high availability (HA) cluster

Answer

  • The ONTAP upgrade sequence in a two-node HA cluster follows the rolling upgrade process.
  • The process ensures minimal disruption and maintains high availability during the upgrade.
  • The sequence is as follows:
    1. Upgrade begins on the standby node.
    2. After the standby node upgrade completes, a takeover is performed.
    3. The upgrade continues on the partner node while the standby node is active.
    4. Once the partner node upgrade completes, a giveback is performed.
    5. The HA pair returns to its original state, with both nodes running the new ONTAP version.
  • This upgrade sequence is the same whether using System Manager or the command line interface (CLI).
  • Rolling upgrade is designed to avoid service interruption for client workloads during the upgrade.
