Applies to

  • ONTAP 9
  • FAS systems
  • SnapMirror
  • Cloud Volumes ONTAP or ONTAP Select with Hard Drive based Aggregates
  • FabricPool
  • CommVault or other backup software

Issue

  • Backup solutions such as CommVault attempts to create a volume clone using the snapshot that corresponds with the restore
  • When volume clone cannot be created quickly enough the restore will time out -OR-
  • When data is tiered off to the capacity tier in a FabricPool, especially with an All policy, ONTAP will need to pull the data back locally to make a volume clone
    • When data is larger than 1+TB this also can time out
  • Then restores may be extremely slow

Note: Exact amount of 'time out' time is not known, but is in minutes, not hours
