Why does Storage Pool Usable Size show 0
Applies to
- ONTAP 9
- FAS Systems
- Storage Pool
Answer
From the ASUP section STORAGE-POOL.XML, the user will saw that a given storage pool shows 0 'Usable' space:
Storage Pool Name FlashPool
UUID of Storage Pool 8bxxxx5d-40xx-11xx-b581-d0xxxxxx4c3b2
State of the Storage Pool normal
Nodes Sharing the Storage Pool NETAPP-01
NETAPP-02
Number of Disks in Storage Pool 3
Allocation Unit Size 719909289984
Storage Type SSD
Storage Pool Usable Size 0
Storage Pool Total Size 2879637159936
Allocation Unit Depth 1
Number of Partitions 4
Is Pool Healthy? trueThe storage pool in this example is using (3) physical SSDs. There are a total of (4) allocation units (AUs), corresponding to the P1,P2,P3, & P4 partitions that the SSD's are set up with.
From the STORAGE-POOL.XML section, all (4) AU's are assigned to the configured aggregate:
Name of Storage Pool FlashPool
Nodes Sharing the Storage Pool NETAPP-02
NETAPP-01
Aggregate FILES_aggr2
Number of AU's Assigned to This Aggregate 4
Capacity 2879637159936
Node NETAPP-02
Original Owner Name NETAPP-02The ‘Storage Pool Usable Size’ refers to the remaining space that would be available in the storage pool depending upon the number of AUs assigned the target aggregate.
As the cluster has allocated all (4) available AUs to the target aggregate, there is zero available storage pool space to allocate to this or any other aggregate.
Additional Information
- As this is only referencing the storage pool cache part of the aggregate, there is no impact to the space usage for user data files on the aggregate itself.
- The cache will not run into any ‘out of space ‘ state as it is dynamically managed based upon the read workloads to the respective voles on the main aggregate.
