Applies to

  • ONTAP 9
  • In the quota report, the SID (Security Identifier) is reported instead of the username

    cluster1::> quota report -vserver svm1 -volume vol1
    Vserver: svm1

                                        ----Disk----  ----Files-----   Quota
    Volume   Tree      Type    ID        Used  Limit    Used   Limit   Specifier
    -------  --------  ------  -------  -----  -----  ------  ------   ---------
    home_share         user
    S-1-5-21-xxxxxxxxxx-xxxxxxxxx-xxxxxxxxxx-xxxxxx  2.13GB  25GB  4420  -   *

Answer

  • Suppose orphaned files (files owned by users who were deleted from Active Directory) exist when ONTAP calculates quotas. In that case, the SID is not converted to a valid username and the quota report shows the SID itself.
  • If a user entry is deleted from the Domain Controller, there is no way for ONTAP to resolve SIDs to valid usernames.
  • The cleanup needs to be done from the Domain Controller end for which the AD team should be engaged.
