  • AFF-A400 and AFF-A300 platforms
  • Mixed-version ONTAP clusters

Issue

Attempting to downgrade ONTAP from 9.17.1P6 to 9.16.1P6 in a cluster containing both AFF-A400 and AFF-A300 nodes fails. During the process, the following error is seen:

Error: command failed: Failed to initiate giveback.
Reason: HA partner RAID or WAFL label versions are older than this node's labels.
Run the "system node image show" command to determine which image on the partner should be booted to be compatible with the local node.

The A300 nodes display: “This platform is not supported in this release” and halt when attempting to boot 9.17.1P6.
The cluster ends up in a mixed-version state (A400 nodes on 9.17.1P6, A300 nodes on 9.16.1P6).
Revert attempts on the A400 nodes fail due to RAID/WAFL label version mismatch with A300 nodes.
