Does modifying the security login role config minimum username length affect the existing accounts in ONTAP?

Answer

The default cluster administrator account "admin" and existing accounts is not affected when setting the minimum username length to 7 characters using the security login role config command.

However, when modifying the role configuration, a warning message appears:

Cluster::> security login role config modify -vserver ontap916 -role admin -username-minlength 7

Warning: User accounts with this role exist. Modifications to the username/password restrictions on this
         role could result in non-compliant user accounts.
Do you want to continue? {y|n}:

This warning indicates:

  • Future password changes or account modifications might be subject to the new restrictions
  • Existing non-compliant accounts (usernames shorter than 7 characters) remain functional but are flagged as non-compliant
