Answer

No, in ONTAP OS, user passwords cannot be directly extracted to a file or any other format.

Notes:

  • For security, passwords are stored encrypted and cannot be retrieved in plain text, even by administrators.
  • ONTAP commands and APIs can provide user names and privileges, but not actual passwords.
  • To back up user information before changing passwords, create a system configuration backup. Note that this backup will not include plain text passwords.
