What is the impact on the other shelves if one shelf is powered off in a single stack configuration?

Answer

  • Disks in a powered-off disk shelf cannot be accessed
  • In the case of single-path cabling, all disk shelves downstream from the powered-off disk shelf will be invisible
  • In the case of dual-path cabling or more, the path via powered-off disk shelf will be cut off, but as long as the other path is still active, the other disk shelves will fundamentally continue to operate

Note: 

  • Aggregates using disks from the powered-off and the invisible disk shelf may go offline,  which may result in IO outages or failures
  • In the case of dual-path cabling or more, there is a risk of delays due to temporary path failover, reduced stack bandwidth, and reduced redundancy
