Upgrading the Service Processor to version 4.1 or 5.1 may cause the SP to boot the backup image

  • AFF A200 / FAS26XX
  • AFF A300 / FAS8200
  • AFF A700 / FAS9000
  • When upgrading the Service Processor (SP) to version 4.1, 5.1 or later, from version 4.0, 5.0, or 5.0.1, the SP might get into a state where it always boots to the  backup image.
  • Since SP upgrades often happen during motherboard replacements, the issue is may be encountered once we reach the SP upgrade step. 
  • The SP will report running a secondary version: [SP.notice]: Running secondary version 4.0
  • In the SP MGMT MLOG (found in the etc/log directory) , you will notice similar error messages:

 May 15 2020 10:56:22 -04:00 [kern_servprocd:info:31290] 0x807b41c00: 0: ERR: Servprocd::SpUpdate: PostUpdateCheck: SP is still booted from the initial firmware version 4.0, after SP startup notification was received.
 May 15 2020 10:56:22 -04:00 [kern_servprocd:info:31290] 0x807b41c00: 0: ERR: Servprocd::SpUpdate: PostUpdateCheck: SP firmware has NOT been updated from version 4.0 to version 4.6P1, as was expected.
May 15 2020 10:56:22 -04:00 [kern_servprocd:info:31290] 0x807b41c00: 0: NOTICE: Servprocd::SpUpdate: SpUpdateReport: SP firmware post-update check has FAILED.
