BMC firmware update below baseline version not supported after controller replacement

  • AFF A900
  • Controller replacement coming with BMC firmware (FW) prior to 16.4
  • ONTAP bundled with BMC firmware 16.5

Issue

  • Node reporting multiple temperature unreadable errors. Example

1/1/2024 00:02:36 node_name ERROR monitor.temp.unreadable: The controller temperature (PCH Temp) is not readable.

  • ONTAP Command Line Interface (CLI) BMC FW upgrade fails with:

::> system service-processor image update -node node_name -package SP_FW_308-04143_16.4.zip
Note: Firmware update will need to reboot the SP on completion. If your console connection is through the SP, it will be disconnected
Do you want to proceed with the firmware update ? {y|n}: y
Error: command failed: Updating Service Processor firmware below bundled baseline version "16.5" is not supported.

  • Unable to SSH the BMC IP of the node: 
:~> ssh admin@123.123.123.123
