Applies to

  • ONTAP 9
  • Microsoft 365
  • Amazon Web Services Simple Email Service (AWS SES)
  • Open Authorization (OAuth)

Answer

  • ONTAP does not support OAuth 2.0 for ASUP email transmission.
  • Microsoft 365 will deprecate basic authentication by September 2025 and require OAuth 2.0 for SMTP authentication.
  • When basic authentication is disabled in Microsoft 365, ASUP email transmission using Microsoft 365 will not work.
  • ONTAP supports HTTPS for ASUP transmission as an alternative to email-based ASUP.
  • Using Microsoft 365 as an ASUP email host must consider the following options:
    • Upgrade to ONTAP 9.16 or later to enable TLS authentication if their email host requires it.
    • Prepare an alternative email host that supports basic authentication or HTTPS for ASUP transmission.
