Answer

Yes,volume autosize can be used with ONTAP FlexGroup volumes.

Additional Information

  • Elastic sizing and volume autosize serve different purposes.
    • Elastic sizing:
      • Redistributes free space across constituents within the same FlexGroup to prevent constituent-full conditions.
      • Does not increase the FlexGroup’s total provisioned size.
    • Volume autosize: Increases the total provisioned size of the FlexGroup when usage crosses a threshold.
  • Enabling autosize grow is appropriate when:
    • The FlexGroup is expected to exceed its current provisioned size.
    • Aggregates provide sufficient free space headroom to accommodate growth.
  • Best practice configuration for FlexGroup autosize:
    • Use grow mode only.
    • Set an explicit maximum size cap.
    • Ensure the autosize grow threshold is lower than the elastic sizing threshold to avoid contention.
    • Validate thresholds per KB Flexgroup constituent full due to the same autosize and elastic size thresholds.
  • How far autosize grows without explicit max/min:

If maximum is not set, ONTAP applies a default maximum (commonly 120% of the original configured volume size).
