  • ONTAP 9.8
  • ONTAP 9.10
  • ONTAP 9.16
  • AutoSupport (ASUP) email notifications
  • Event Management System (EMS) email notifications
  • Management LIFs: node-mgmt LIF, cluster-mgmt LIF
  • Service policies for management services
  • SP/BMC management processors

Answer

  • SMTP traffic originates from ONTAP management LIFs(node-mgmt LIF, cluster-mgmt LIF).
  • Services involved:
    • management-autosupport (AutoSupport email).
    • management-ems (EMS email).
  • SP/BMC IP is not used for SMTP.
  • SP/BMC does not send AutoSupport email through its IP.
  • ONTAP 9.6:
    • management-autosupport and management-ems are permitted on node-mgmt LIF and cluster-mgmt LIF by default.
    • The source IP is the LIF that establishes the SMTP connection based on routing and service availability.
    • If the SMTP server is reachable via a node-mgmt LIF, the source IP is the node-mgmt LIF address.
    • If routing/availability prefers cluster-mgmt LIF , the source IP is the cluster-mgmt LIF address.
  • ONTAP 9.8 / 9.10 / 9.16:
    • Service policies enable explicit control of which LIFs can use management-autosupport and management-ems.
    • The source IP is the LIF bound to these services via service policy and selected by routing.
    • To pin SMTP to a specific LIF, allow these services only on that LIF and remove them from other LIFs.
  • Note: When an SMTP server enforces an allow list by source IP, ensure the intended management LIF IP(s) are allowed on that server.
