Answer

Yes. ONTAP 10 Gbps capable Ethernet ports automatically establish a 10 Gbps link when connected to a compatible 10 Gbps switch.

  • Auto negotiation is enabled by default on ONTAP physical Ethernet ports.
  • When a 10 Gbps capable ONTAP port is connected to:
    • A 10 Gbps capable switch port
    • A supported SFP+ transceiver
    • A supported cable
    • the link comes up at 10 Gbps automatically.
  • Manual speed or duplex configuration is not required on the ONTAP side in standard deployments.

Additional Information

  • When replacing a lower speed switch with a 10 Gbps switch, verify that the switch side configuration remains consistent:
    • Virtual LAN (VLAN) configuration
    • Link Aggregation Control Protocol (LACP) settings:
      • Mode (active or passive)
      • Number of member ports
    • Maximum Transmission Unit (MTU) size
  • Configuration mismatches can result in connectivity or performance issues even when the physical link is up.
