Sudden Increase in Free Space on ONTAP LUNs After Restore Operation: Understanding Storage Efficiency Impact
Applies to
- ONTAP 9
- AFF-A400
- Thin-provisioned volumes and LUNs
- Linux hosts (OES/SUSE)
Issue
- After performing a large restore to a Linux share comprised of two NetApp LUNs, both thin-provisioned from the same volume, the reported free space on a share increased unexpectedly.
- No files appear to be missing, and the share size remain correct.
- There is concern about a possible discrepancy between the reported free space and actual data, and whether storage efficiency features could cause such a change.
- Before restore:
- Volume: vol1
- Total physical used: 14.0TB
- Logical used: 19.7TB
- Logical available: 6.95TB
- After restore:
- Volume: vol1
- Total physical used: 11.6TB
- Logical used: 20.1TB
- Logical available: 9.37TB
- Storage efficiency report showed ~8.5TB savings after the restore.
