Sudden Increase in Free Space on ONTAP LUNs After Restore Operation: Understanding Storage Efficiency Impact

Issue

  • After performing a large restore to a Linux share comprised of two NetApp LUNs, both thin-provisioned from the same volume, the reported free space on a share increased unexpectedly. 
  • No files appear to be missing, and the share size remain correct.
  • There is concern about a possible discrepancy between the reported free space and actual data, and whether storage efficiency features could cause such a change.
  • Before restore:
  • Volume: vol1
  • Total physical used: 14.0TB
  • Logical used: 19.7TB
  • Logical available: 6.95TB
  • After restore:
  • Volume: vol1
  • Total physical used: 11.6TB
  • Logical used: 20.1TB
  • Logical available: 9.37TB
  • Storage efficiency report showed ~8.5TB savings after the restore.
