Can free space be moved from one aggregate to another aggregate in ONTAP?
Applies to
- ONTAP 9
- FAS & AFF Systems
Answer
No, ONTAP does not support directly moving free space from one aggregate to another.
To reallocate space between aggregates, the only supported method is to delete the source aggregate and reassign its disks to the desired node or aggregate. This process involves:
- Deleting the aggregate that contains the unused space.
- Reassigning the disks from the deleted aggregate to the partner or target node.
- Adding the reassigned disks to the desired aggregate to expand its capacity.
Note : This is a manual and disruptive process and should be planned during a maintenance window.
