Is preventive replacement recommended for an E-Series drive experiencing intermittent controller-side timeouts?
Applies to
NetApp E-Series
Answer
- Preventive replacement is not recommended for an E-Series drive that only reports intermittent controller-side timeouts.
- Replace a drive proactively only when an impending drive failure is detected and recorded in the Major Event Log (MEL), including:
- Event
2285- Impending drive failure detected by drive - Event
101f- Summary of impending drive failure detected by controller - Event
1023- Drive copy triggered by controller-detected impending drive failure
- Event
- If none of these events are present and no additional symptoms are observed, preventive replacement is not required.
- E-Series automatically manages drive copy and failure handling when a valid drive failure condition is detected.
- Updating the drive firmware is recommended to improve stability and timeout recovery behavior.
- If preventive replacement is required for operational or business reasons, contact NetApp Support to review available options.
