Answer

In ASA r2 systems, only two encryption types are supported:
  • NSE NetApp Storage Encryption: Hardware-based encryption using self-encrypting drives
  • Software-based encryption
NetApp Aggregate Encryption(NAE) is not supported and cannot be configured on ASA r2.
  • For dual-layer encryption, the software encryption component uses the same technical foundation as NVE.
  • However, unlike traditional NVE, it is not configurable at the volume level. Instead, it is enabled at the cluster level.
  • The reason NAE is not supported is due to ASA r2 architecture, where Storage Availability Zones replace traditional aggregates and are system-managed, so aggregate-level encryption control is not exposed.
