StorageGRID decommission fails with failed to remove the following nodes from RSM cluster

Issue

  • When decommissioning one or more nodes, the following error is observed in the StorageGRID UI > Maintenance > Decommission Nodes page: 
An error occurred while removing the configuration or clustering settings for one or more nodes. Resolve the issue and restart mgmt-api to retry: Failed to remove the following nodes from the RSM cluster: ["node_name_1","node_name_2"].

  • In var/local/log/nms.log, the following error is observed: 
Jul 22 16:41:08 <pa_nodename> NMS: |2024-07-22T16:41:08.143| ERROR   An error occurred while removing the configuration or clustering settings for one or more nodes. Resolve the issue and restart mgmt-api to retry: Failed to remove the following nodes from the RSM cluster: ["node_name", "node_name1"].
  • In StorageGRID UI > Nodes page, the decommissioned nodes are still present and showing in an Unknown state, but no longer showing in Grid Topology.
