Old PGE version fails to boot more recent GRID version

After (re-)install of StorageGRID 11.4 on an appliance running PGE 1.6, StorageGRID fails to boot into base-os.
Syslog shows the following error mounting the StorageGRID-SG-OS-root and/or StorageGRID-SG-OS-part2 volumes:

EXT4-fs : couldn't mount RDWR because of unsupported optional features (400)
