Simultaneous hardware failure alerts on StorageGRID due to misreporting BMC

Issue

  • Multiple hardware failure alerts reported on the StorageGRID UI.
  • Several ASUP generated cases due to BMC misreporting sensors.
  • Alerts reported against affected node:
    • Appliance DAS drive fault detected for all Drive slots: HDD00 - HDD011
    • Appliance fan fault detected for all Fan units: Fan_SYS0 - Fan_SYS7
    • Appliance compute controller power supply A has a problem
    • Appliance compute controller power supply B has a problem
  • In BMC Interface > Logs & Reports > IPMI Event Logs report several alerts for dated Jan 1, 2000.

Jan/1/2000    00:00:55 [Warning] [BMC FW Health] [Management Subsystem Health] Management Controller unavailable (BMC hardware watchdog timeout reset) - Asserted

  • "IpmiEventLog" in  base-os-logs/var/local/gemini-system-status/status.json in StorageGRID logs report events dated Jan 1, 2000.
