Answer

  • Unified management using the GFN feature is not possible when connecting StorageGRID environments running different versions (specifically, 12.0.0 and 11.9.0).
  • All nodes in both grids must be running StorageGRID firmware version 12.1 or later to enable global federated namespace.
  • Environments on versions below 12.1 are not supported for this feature.
  • Key considerations and limitations:
    • GFN requires all connected grids to be at version 12.1 or higher.
    • Downgrade or revert is not possible after enabling the feature.
    • S3 clients must support AWS Signature Version 4 (SigV4); SigV2 and anonymous requests are not supported.
    • A maximum of 10 connections per grid is allowed.
  • Recommended steps:
    1. Upgrade the new environment (12.0.0) to 12.1.
    2. Upgrade the existing environment (11.9.0) to 12.1.
    3. Once both grids are at 12.1, enable the global federated namespace.
Note: Grid federation connections can be pre-created on version 12.0, but the global namespace must remain disabled until both grids are upgraded.
