Issue

Customers receive continuous warning messages in SnapCenter for multiple resource groups. The warning appears as:

Activity 'Registering Backup and Applying Retention' failed with error: An error occurred while sending the request.

Additional job log excerpts may show:

Retention: Skipped the retention as another retention is in progress.
...
2025-09-01T23:54:17.6261102-06:00 ERROR SMCore_233916 PID=[3748] TID=[389] The result from get-ncsnapshot is null/empty

Other symptoms:

  • Backup jobs complete, but retention processing is skipped or delayed.
  • Snapshots from previous months remain on secondary storage, not being deleted as expected.
  • SnapCenter attempts to process all backup entries, including those no longer present on primary storage, resulting in excessive ONTAP calls.
  • No functional impact, but frequent warning emails are sent to management.
