OTV: 'Cannot complete file creation' on existing vVol datastore

Issue

  • Creating a new VM on an existing vVol datastore fails with the following error:
Cannot complete file creation operation. Operation failed, diagnostics report: <VM> (Cannot Create File).
  • VM creation had worked previously.
  • Several VMs currently sit on the vVol datastore without issue.
  • In the OTV buffer.log file, OTV reports errors similar to the following:

Message Content: {\"name\":\"create VVol Task\",\"task_id\":\"X-X-X-X-X\",\"correlation_id\":\"X-X-X-X-X\",\"is_async\":false,\"job_id\":\"###\",\"task_status\":\"FAILED\",\"error_message\":\"create vVol task failed with: create vm : createAndPersistVVol : No compatible volume found after evaluating the datastore with Ranking algorithm. FlexVol <VVOL> has reached its maximum threshold of #% (LUN count of ###). Current LUN count ###....

  • The Current LUN count reported by OTV matches the flexvol LUN count reported by the ONTAP cluster.
  • The LUN count of value matches #% of the product LUN per flexvol limit.
    • To confirm the product LUN per flexvol limit of a particular product, refer to Hardware Universe.
