There are multiple influencing factors but the root cause is usually unwanted electrical noise induced into the cable and causing false-character recognition. When the noise is severe enough it will cause the BMC/SP to expend excessive cycles/time, all of which reduces the BMC/SP's ability to handle other important tasks.
